Whilst reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions of a building, thermal insulation and pre-insulated panels can impact on climate change and ozone depletion if they are not manufactured in a responsible way.

CFCs, HFCs and HCFCs are well known in refrigeration and air-conditioning facilities. However, HCFCs, and previously CFCs, can also be used as a blowing agent during the manufacture of phenolic and PIR insulation products. Blowing agents used in foam insulation will have a different Global Warming Potential (GWP) and Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP).Blowing agents used in the manufacture of Phenolic and PIR insulation products, such as HCFCs, can be released into the atmosphere and can accelerate climate change and deplete the ozone layer - CFCs and HCFCs have a high GWP and ODP.Want to find out about Global Warming Potential and Ozone Depletion Potential?
